The first modern consumer cooperative was founded in England in 1844, named the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers.
The most significant merit of the Rochdale Pioneers was to enshrine in their statute the fundamental principles that still inspire the entire cooperative movement worldwide today, such as the sharing of values and interests among members, internal democracy (based on the "one person, one vote" principle), religious tolerance, the right to education, gender equality (starting with the recognition of property rights for women, not contemplated by the laws of the time), and solidarity.
